Culture Experience In Kyoto: Wedding photography wearing Kimono

Updated: Dec 23, 2018

We conducted a wedding photography plan for a non-Japanese couple

Hi! We are students of Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan. Did you know that non-Japanese can take wedding photography wearing kimono in Kyoto? To let non-Japanese know the attraction of it we conducted a Japanese wedding photography plan for a non-Japanese couple at Uji city, Kyoto.

In this article, we would like to tell you attractions of Japanese wedding which our client couple found and our messages for non-Japanese.

A couple who cooperated with our project was Michelle and Alex who are Chinese American. We ran the project which contained photography and Japanese culture experience.

As the reason to participate in our project, the bride and groom talked to us as follows.

"For us, it is a very unique way to feel the Japan culture, a special memory for us as well."

Hair styling and dressing

Speaking of Japan, kimono is one of the most famous things. In Japanese wedding, women wear Irouchikake or Shiromuku, men wear Montsuki haori hakama. Also, about hair style, there is a Japanese traditional style called Nihongami. However, in these days the hair styles which suit each person are more popular among people from other country.

For photography of our original Japanese wedding project, Irouchikake and Montsuki Haori Hakama were used as clothes for bride and groom. The reason for choosing these clothes as their costume is that the bride told us that white is associated with death for their country culture. Also, the gloom wanted to try wearing Irouchikake because it has beautiful colors and patterns which symbolize Japanese beauty.

Move by a celebration taxi

There are taxis used for celebration scenes like wedding, which called celebration taxi. There is a Chinese character which means congratulations in the front of a taxi. When you get off it, a driver lays a red carpet. You would enjoy a different experience.

Feel special taking a rickshaw ride

In Japan, there is a two-wheeled vehicle that track man pull. While taking a ride and moving, we took photos at shooting spots. You can feel unusualness and special at Uji where is one of the most Japanese-like cityscapes and nature.

It was the first time for both of the bride and groom to ride rickshaw. they seemed to be really happy with it.

Groom said, “A Photo shot at temple and shrine is original Japanese culture and I was very surprised, because I have never been experienced in Taiwan and USA.” In other country like America, it’s common to took photos in memorable places.

Lunch and Wagashi workshop

After wedding photoshoot with kimono, we prepared “Soba” for lunch. This is one Japanese cuisine “Washoku”. They enjoyed its unique taste so much.

We also prepared making Japanese sweets experience for them. That is very difficult and that’s shape or appearance depends on person. They both made sweets full of individuality struggling with first experience.

They said “Japanese sweets are sensitive and it’s refreshing to be a motif of seasonal flowers.” and “Through this experience, I’ve come to love Japanese culture even more.”

In this way, couple can have a nice chat and get a greater connection.

Japanese wedding culture is not only for Japanese

We have worked on this project for a half year so that client can have a special time once in their lives. We hope you have a happy and unforgettable memory with your partner by experiencing Japanese wedding photoshoot.

Not only us, wedding planners, but also a lot of people like kimono dressers and kimono craftsmen wish your happiness.

Why don’t you spend a lovely and sweet time with your life partner through Japanese style wedding?
